The Exams Catalunya Annual ELT conference has become one of the most interesting events in the ELT professional’s calendar in Catalonia. Last month’s 3rd ELT conference, which took place in the ICAB Palauet Casades in the centre of Barcelona, had a general theme of Exploring the importance of English: Intercultural communication and personal enrichment and economic improvement.
After registering, participants enjoyed coffee and pastries while browsing the stands of the major publishers who had set up stalls to show the latest classroom materials available to English language teachers.
The conference started off with plenary talks by leading experts in the field of ELT including James Styring, author of Cambridge English Prepare!, who gave a fascinating talk called Engaging Generation Z and Juliet Wilson, Director of Network Services at Cambridge English, who gave a very interesting talk called Linking learning and Assessment: The Cambridge Approach. Another highlight was the talk by Dr Martin Dewey, professor of linguistics at Kings College London, on global Englishes and English as a lingua franca.
Attendees spent the afternoon participating in practical workshops where they learnt new skills to apply in their classrooms and explored innovative ideas with their peers. These sessions included both exam focused sessions such as Cambridge English: First – Teaching tips for the Reading & Use of English paper and sessions which focussed on more general skills such as Speaking naturally – encouraging fluency in advanced learners and Image, video and critical thinking.
Next year’s conference will take place on November 19th 2016 but in the meantime, you can continue your professional development with Exams Catalunya by attending one of our seminars which take place throughout the year. You can find our seminar programme here. Remember that our seminars are free for teachers from our preparation centres.
